124 THE LEADER IN ME

These are but a few of the stories that reflect how the leadership theme is rippling across the United States. I could tell you about more schools like Rowlett Elementary in Florida, which has combined the 7 Habits with the school's magnet theme of arts and music for more than eight years. While not doing the full leadership theme, teachers there are extremely creative in matching the habits to Florida's standards for character education. I could also tell you about Summit Academy, a charter school in Draper, Utah, where forty parents per week volunteer to teach students the habits. They said that it would be great if the staff of an entire school attended the 7 Habits so that all the teachers and administrators could use the habits as a common language. As a principal, David was intrigued by the idea, but he was not sure how his staff would react. He hoped at best that 80 percent of them would get behind it, but to his delight, all but one or two voted to do it. "We're in!" they said.

Thirty teachers and twenty support staff were trained in the habits chunk by chunk over a six-week period. The habits quickly became a noticeable
